Meet Roger
As Roger Harty got older, he found himself thinking more about his health and what he could do to take control of it.
He knew that simply thinking about his wellbeing wasn’t enough. He needed to take action — and he wanted the right guidance and motivation to help him do it.
That decision led Roger to MFK, and fitness has since become a regular part of his life.
The Challenge
Roger’s biggest challenge was turning good intentions into action.
He was concerned about his health as he aged and knew he wanted to look after himself, but recognised that he needed support, structure and motivation.
For Roger, it was about making his overall wellbeing a priority rather than something he would keep putting off.
And like many people getting back into regular exercise, the first couple of weeks weren’t necessarily easy.
The First Few Weeks
When Roger started training, he initially felt sluggish and experienced some soreness.
But that period only lasted around two weeks.
What helped him through it was the support he received from both the trainers and the people around him.
“I was very impressed by the encouragement and quality of the trainers and the warmth and welcome from the others in the group.”
That encouragement helped Roger get through the initial adjustment period and begin building a routine.
The Turning Point
As Roger started seeing and feeling the benefits of training, staying consistent became easier.
Exercise and looking after his health stopped being something he simply thought about and became part of his daily routine.
He began noticing physical changes, but he also discovered benefits that went far beyond fitness alone.
His confidence increased, he enjoyed the camaraderie of the group and training gave him a greater sense of peace of mind.
The Results
Since joining MFK, Roger has experienced changes across many areas of his life:
Fitness and health have become part of his daily routine
His clothes fit better
His self-confidence has increased
He enjoys the camaraderie of training with others
He has gained greater peace of mind
He is taking on challenges he wouldn’t have considered before
He has developed a more rounded approach to his wellbeing
For Roger, the impact has been about much more than what happens during a workout.
“It has made my life more fun and encouraged me to take on more challenges that I wouldn’t have dreamt of five years ago.”
More Than Just Fitness
One of Roger’s biggest realisations has been that wellbeing isn’t just about how fit you are.
It’s also about enjoying yourself, paying attention to your diet, feeling good and having people around you who help you keep going.
The social side of MFK has become particularly important to him, with the camaraderie and welcoming atmosphere adding another dimension to his training.
Seeing and feeling the results also gives Roger the motivation and self-discipline to continue.
Progress, Not Perfection
Roger has also developed a healthy attitude towards the times when life gets in the way.
He knows that consistency doesn’t mean being perfect all the time.
“If I ‘fall off the horse’, I know that I soon will be back on and that this is all just part of the journey.”
Rather than allowing a setback to become a reason to stop altogether, Roger knows he can simply get back into his routine and carry on.
That mindset has helped make health and fitness something sustainable rather than a short-term fix.
What This Means for You
If you’ve found yourself thinking more about your health as you get older, Roger’s story is a great reminder that thinking about change and taking action are two very different things.
Getting started might feel difficult at first. You may feel sluggish or sore while your body adjusts.
But with the right guidance, encouragement and people around you, those first few weeks can lead to something much bigger.
For Roger, taking action has meant better-fitting clothes and improved fitness — but it has also brought greater confidence, camaraderie, peace of mind and the desire to take on new challenges.
