When Rosemarie McGarty first started, she had very little experience using gym equipment.
The idea of joining a group class brought a couple of understandable worries. Would she be able to keep up? And what would it actually be like once she got there?
That fear of the unknown could easily have stopped her from starting.
Instead, Rosemarie gave it a go — and discovered a welcoming environment where she could learn, build confidence and become stronger.
The Challenge
Rosemarie wanted to improve her strength, but her lack of experience with gym equipment made getting started feel daunting.
Her two biggest concerns were:
- Not being able to keep up with the class
- Fear of the unknown
She needed somewhere she could learn how to exercise properly without feeling overwhelmed or left behind.
Why She Nearly Didn't Start
Walking into a gym when you don’t know how the equipment works can feel intimidating.
But Rosemarie quickly found that she didn’t need to arrive knowing what to do.
“There was a very warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere and very clear instructions around each exercise within the circuit.”
Having clear guidance helped take away that uncertainty and allowed Rosemarie to concentrate on her own workout.
The Turning Point
As Rosemarie became more familiar with the exercises and equipment, her confidence started to grow.
The things that had once felt unknown gradually became normal.
And she soon discovered she was capable of more than she had expected.
Instead of worrying about the weights and equipment, Rosemarie started challenging herself — and seeing what she could really do.
The Results
Since getting started, Rosemarie has:
Lifted more weight than she thought she could
Overcome her fear of gym equipment
Become stronger overall
Gained confidence with different exercises
Found group training easier than working out alone
Enjoyed plenty of variety in her workouts
“I have lifted more weight than I thought I could and I have no fear of any of the equipment.”
That’s a huge change from someone who started with very little experience of gym equipment.
Feeling Stronger in Everyday Life
Rosemarie’s original goal was to become stronger — and that’s exactly what she has experienced.
“I feel stronger in general, which is what I hoped to get from the programme.”
Sometimes the best results aren’t complicated. It’s simply about feeling stronger, more capable and more confident than you did when you started.
What Rosemarie Loves About Training With Us
One of Rosemarie’s favourite things is that the sessions don’t feel repetitive.
With different circuits and trainers, every class brings something different.
She also values the encouragement she gets from both the trainers and the other members.
“The members are welcoming and the trainers are very good at motivating you.”
For Rosemarie, being part of a group also makes it easier to turn up and train compared with trying to work out alone.
What This Means for You
If you’ve avoided the gym because you don’t know how the equipment works or you’re worried you won’t be able to keep up, Rosemarie’s story shows that you don’t need experience before you start.
Good instruction and the right support can help remove that fear of the unknown.
Rosemarie went from having very little experience with gym equipment to confidently using it, lifting more weight than she thought possible and feeling stronger overall.
And she’s been able to enjoy plenty of variety along the way.
